The Origins and History of the Clun Forest Breed

There is very little written about the early history of the Clun Forest breed.    While sheep have always been part of the economy near the town of Clun and in the nearby hills of eastern Wales and western Shropshire, the Clun Forest sheep was not officially standardized as a breed until 1925 with the formation of the Clun Forest Sheep Breeders Society.  Some early mentions of Clun Forest Sheep talk of a white faced breed that is far different from the modern Clun we know.

Below are eight excellent articles which give a full account of the origins of the Clun and its establishment as a major breed in the UK, the US and the Netherlands.

1 - Origins of the Breed - (from the (UK) Clun Forest Sheep Breeders Society Flock Book)

2 - Origins of the Clun Forest Sheep - M.T. Eckley

3 - History of the Clun Forest Breed -  Rosemary Ruddell

4 - The History of Clun Forests in North America (1970s) - R.A.K. Turner

5 - Later North American Imports (1980s) - Angus Rouse

6 - Clun Forest Importations to the Netherlands - Gerard Scholtes

7 - Expansion of the North American Gene Pool  - Bets Reedy

8 - AI Sires for the 21st Century- Michele Stute (coming soon!)
